Doctoral students organize e-conference “Materials, Media and Methodes: Digital Issues in East Asian Studies” at the Center for Asian and Transcultural Studies in Heidelberg
The three day long, hybrid event organized by a doctoral student group at Heidelberg University features numerous talks by emerging scholars, who will adress a great range of material from ancient to modern times across East Asia. The conference will examine the specificities of East Asian materials and languages, and investigate potentials and limits of digital methods and infrastructures in addressing both existing and emerging research questions across disciplines in the humanities. Contributions will address “medium specific” aspects of computers, software programs, and interfaces, and query the problem-oriented nature of individual digital solutions. Topics and leading questions will thus engage with digitization, quantitative versus/and qualitative methods, canonical and archival practices, textual analysis, visual recognition as well as biases and limits of digital tools.
The students contributions are supplemented by three lectures of distinguished senior scholars, who are active in the field: Donald Sturgeon (Durham), AKAMA Ryō (Ritsumeikan), and Michael Radich (Heidelberg). The event will also include the screening of the animation film Inu-oh 犬王 (Masaaki Yuasa, 2021) organized in cooperation with the Nanjing University of the Arts.
The conference will take place online from February 3 to 5, 2023 (zoom).
Registration is free of charge, but mandatory for organizational reasons. Please find the detailed program and access information at DH Conference 2023 (dhconf2022.github.io)
